Art A's Beastly Beasties!

Art A has been hard at work on these vibrant, fantastical "Alebrijes", based on the mythical hybrid paper mache sculptures of Mexican artist Pedro Linares. Students brainstormed their own creatures using a quick drawing game in groups, then went on to build their maquettes using newspaper, tape, and papier-mâché. Once dry, students then gessoed and painted their "alebrijes" with acrylic paint in multiple coloured sections. The final step of the process proved the most exciting since students were allowed to use a wide array of paint pens to add patterns to their beastly beasties. Students were asked to implement a variety of repeating, reflective, progressive and/or organic patterns to embellish their "Alebrijes" and reflect Pedro Linares style of art.
