Art B: Final Projects in Soft Pastels
After the very challenging and focused self-portraits, I decided to come up with a final project to celebrate colour and free expression. Students were introduced to soft pastel medium through a presentation of its use throughout art history, including some of my own works.
Using the document camera, I demonstrated several techniques first, before turning it over to the students. We practiced a number of new techniques, such as using water to set the pastel and mixing complementary colours to create more dynamic neutrals. Vocabulary such as scumbling, stippling and analogous were learned and utilized throughout the unit.
For our final application project, students were allowed to chose their subject matter and apply some of these new techniques. In only two class periods they were able to create a wide array of successful works, which were shared in our final critique today.
