Art B: Gridded Self-Portraits

These outstanding self-portraits were created by Art B students over the last month. They started by using Photobooth & Photoshop software to capture, crop and edit an image for drawing from.

A grid was then placed over the reference image and enlarged to fit the drawing paper.  Using the grid breaks down the image into smaller squares that can be worked on more easily and help with proportions.

Students learned how to use different pencil weights, charcoal and white pencil, and blending stumps to create believable shading that follows the form and create contrast.

They finished the project with their first critique, learning from one another's work and sharing ideas for the next piece they do.
